HANOI, ZA 27 JULI 2012 - Tijdens de Vietnam-oorlog besproeiden de Amerikanen het Aziatische land met gif. De producent van 'Agent Orange', Dow Chemical, mag nu de Spelen sponsoren, maar Vietnam protesteert.

De Vietnamese minister van Sport, Hoang Anh Tuan, heeft protest aangetekend tegen het miljoenencontract dat het Amerikaanse bedrijf met de sportorganisatie heeft afgesloten. Dow Chemical en Monsanto produceerden voor de Vietnamoorlog (1955-1975) de stof
Agent Orange, een bestrijdings- en ontbladeringsmiddel waarmee de Amerikanen massaal de bossen en de akkers wilden vernietigen, maar waar veel Vietnamezen de gevolgen nog van ondervinden.

Al in januari kwam de sponsordeal in het nieuws, toen Meredith Alexander, commissielid van het ethisch comité van de Spelen, haar ontslag live op tv aankondigde. Ze kon het niet verantwoorden dat een bedrijf de Spelen zou sponsoren dat nog steeds geen verantwoordelijkheid wil nemen voor de giframp in Bhopal, in 1984, in een fabriek van Union Carbide, onderdeel van Dow. Door een gaslek kwamen er meer dan 22.000 mensen om het leven.

De relaties tussen Vietnam en de Verenigde Staten zijn tegenwoordig genormaliseerd. De afgelopen twee jaar heeft Hillary Clinton, minister van Buitenlandse Zaken, drie keer het land bezocht. De VS heeft geld betaald voor schoonmaakoperaties, maar dat beperkte zich hoofdzakelijk tot belangrijke plekken zoals voormalige opslagplaatsen voor het bestrijdingsmiddel Agent Orange. Compensatie voor het leed dat de bevolking is aangedaan, is er nooit geweest.

"Veel Vietnamezen zijn boos met de beslissing van de organisatoren van het Olympisch Comité", zegt Nguyen Van Rinh, voormalig generaal en hoofd van de Vietnamese Organisatie van de Slachtoffers van Agent Orange. Volgens de Vietnamese regering heeft de verspreiding van het gif geleid tot een half miljoen kinderen die met een beperking ter wereld zijn gekomen. Het Rode Kruis in Vietnam houdt dit aantal op minstens 150.000, en vermoedt dat Agent Orange effect gehad heeft op 3 miljoen mensen.

Amerikaanse wetenschappers zijn altijd sceptisch geweest over deze schattingen. Ze vinden dat het onderzoek van onvoldoende niveau was. Aan de andere kant hebben vrouwelijke oorlogsveteranen in de VS zelf wél compensatie gekregen en is er steun geweest voor veteranen wier kinderen werden geboren met een open ruggetje of andere beperkingen - ook al zijn wetenschappers er ook bij hen niet van overtuigd dat er een causaal verband is met Agent Orange.

I think this can help make a strong case, in atdidion to sound fundamentals, of why a long-term investor with an investing horizon beyond 10 years would be interested in beginning to commit capital to this market in solid dividend paying stocks. Not only do you have the advantage of securing a higher level of cashflow from these investments, but many have global operations (>50% of revenues from non-US sources) trading and forward price to earnings ratios under double digits. Add the two factors together and you have what has historically been an excellent opportunity to invest.

Jan. 26, 2012 - When sports fans and athletes arrive in London this summer to celebrate the Olympic Games, the victims of a gas leak disaster that happened on a winter night in central India almost 30 years ago are unlikely to be at the forefront of their minds.

But today's resignation of Meredith Alexander, the Olympic Games' ethics commissioner, may prompt Olympic visitors to take a second look at the plastic wrap that will encircle the east London stadium and remember its connection with the disaster that killed thousands of people in Bhopal in 1984.

The wrap's sponsor, US chemical company Dow, signed a multi-million pound deal in 2010 to become one of the 11 Worldwide Olympic Partners.

Dow owns US-based Union Carbide Corporation (UCC), the company which held a majority share in the Indian subsidiary that owned and operated the UCC plant responsible for the 1984 gas leak disaster, which killed thousands of people.

"I feel that the commission ended up becoming an apologist for Dow Chemicals and is taking Dow's side in the debate about whether or not Dow bears responsibility for the Bhopal tragedy," Meredith Alexander told Amnesty International.

More than 100,000 continue to suffer from serious health problems as a result of the leak, while toxic waste at the plant site is yet to be fully cleaned.

"I can't look myself in the mirror and be associated with that. And my decision to do this publicly comes from a desire to help ensure that the victims of the Bhopal tragedy actually have their voices heard," said Meredith Alexander.

The Commission for a Sustainable London (CSL), the ethics body that monitors the London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games (LOCOG), was asked to consider the Dow deal's appropriateness for an event billed as the most sustainable Games ever.

LOCOG gave the deal the green light – but when Amnesty International presented Meredith Alexander with evidence that documented the lasting impact of the Bhopal tragedy, she decided she could no longer continue being part of the CSL.

London Mayor Boris Johnson and LOCOG chairman Sebastian Coe's way of handling the case has angered Alexander, who says LOCOG should cancel the contract with Dow.

"When the organizers were looking at the bids, they claimed that they didn't see anything about Bhopal. I think that's inexcusable – a simple Google search is going to turn up all kinds of information about Dow and Bhopal. The process was flawed and people like Boris Johnson and Lord Coe should have looked at that.

"You can still see the impact of the toxic leak in Bhopal today – in the rates of miscarriages, the rates of illness. It just didn't feel right to be part of a body that doesn't acknowledge those people," she said.

Alexander doesn't buy the argument that Dow only bought Union Carbide in 2001 and therefore cannot be held responsible for what happened in Bhopal.

"When a company buys another company, they get all the good stuff, the assets, the know-how. But they also get the bad stuff. And with Union Carbide, the bad stuff is a horrible toxic legacy of human rights abuse. Dow chose to buy that company, so it's now Dow's disaster to deal with," she said.

"There are two sides to every story, but right now the people in power are ignoring the victims of Bhopal."

..er is veel over Dow en het vnl protest uit India te vinden en ook over het negeren van de IOC-bonzen. Laat staan dat dit in Nederland de burgelijke pers haalt, zoals het in de fik steken van 'n pop van Coe (de baas in London) daar hij beweerde dat Dow de Bhopal-slachtoffers genoeg waren gecompenseerd....e.d
